A preview — from Chapter 1: Planning Your Space

The following is a short excerpt from the guide.

Before you spend a dollar on gear, spend an hour thinking about your room. The single biggest factor in how your recordings sound isn't your microphone, your interface, or your monitors — it's your room acoustics. A $50 microphone in a well-treated room will outperform a $500 microphone in an untreated bedroom every time.

Choosing the Right Room

If you have a choice of rooms, here's what to look for:

  • Irregular shapes are better than perfect squares or rectangles. Square rooms create strong standing waves that colour your sound badly.
  • Carpeted floors absorb mid and high frequencies that would otherwise bounce around and muddy your recordings.
  • A room with existing furniture — bookshelves, sofas, curtains — already has some natural acoustic treatment built in.
💡 The Clap Test
Stand in the centre of your room and clap once, sharply. If you hear a flutter or ringing that decays slowly, your room has problematic reflections. If the clap sounds dull and absorbed quickly, your room is well-damped.

Basic DIY Acoustic Treatment

You don't need an acoustic engineer or expensive panels to make a meaningful improvement. The goal isn't a dead, anechoic room — it's controlling the worst reflections while keeping enough life in the space to sound natural.

The first reflection points are where sound from your monitors bounces off walls and reaches your ears. Treating these has the most dramatic impact on mixing accuracy...
